BREATHING FOR PEACE

A continuing individual and collective process
--------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, July 5: I was invited to give a conference about Peacebuilding in Lebanon and my personal experience, by 'The Art of Living' 's event 'Breathing for Peace' (Hotel Bella Riva, Manara, Beirut-Lebanon). It was a fantastic gathering of Lebanese from all different backgrounds and identities, breathing individually and together for peace.
The Art of Living Foundation was founded in 1982 by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, and is one of the largest humanitarian organizations initiating numeros social projects in more than 146 countries. In Lebanon, courses offered by this organization include yoga, meditation and breathing techniques (Sudarshan Kriya) which uses specific rythms of the breath to eliminate stress, transform overpowering emotions and restore peace of mind.
"Everyone wants greater success, better health, and peace of mind. What keeps us from achieving these qualities in our life is stress. The degree to which stress influences our lives is generally underestimated. Often the mind clings on to anger, guilt and regrets about the past, or anxiety about the future. This oscillation of the mind is the determining factor for tension and stress both for ourselves and for the people around us".
To all the individuals who were participating in the gathering, thank you again for this wonderful moment and space of sharing and hoping for a better situation in Lebanon.
Thank you for the organizers, and especially Christian, Oscar and his lovely wife Lubna. Wishing you all the best in your quest for peace. We will definitely keep in touch and work together.
Pamela

Summary of my Conference:

Building Peace : Individual-Collective Dynamics
by Pamela Chrabieh Badine, PhD.
('Breathing for Peace' Gathering - Art of Living Foundation)
Hotel Bella Riva, Beirut, 05-07-2008
------------------------
1- My story (personal experience):

-TRAUMAS – DENIAL (الصدمات - عدم تقبل الماضي والهروب منه): Born and lived through war, carried traumas, denied the past till the mid 90s.
-OPENESS – AWARENESS – DIALOGUE- RESPECT – TOLERANCE and COEXISTENCE Studied in Religious Arts and had friends from different religious backgrounds (in Lebanon and in Canada where I continued my studies – Masters and PhD in Theology- Sciences of Religions). Recognized the multiple identities and respect.
-REVISITING THE PAST: self-criticism (introspection), constructing a personal memory of the war, reconciling with my past and the past of my country (pardoning without forgetting)
-CONVIVIALITY (التعايش)(personal and collective levels: continuing process - عملية مستمرة…)
-------------------
2) Applying the Individual Peace Process on a collective level:

1- Conflict Transformation or Peacemaking: the forging of an actual settlement
2- Human Security or Peacekeeping: the enforced prevention of further violence

Silence the weapons and deconstruct the barriers between warriors or active fighters

3- Trauma Healing, Interfaith and Interreligious Dialogues, Restorative Justice:
Building bridges – Conviviality

Individual level : with one’s multiple identities, memories, fears, hopes, etc.
Collective level: between all the social actors of a society- a country / international level
----------------------
3) Gibran Khalil Gibran, The Prophet:

"Your soul is oftentimes a battlefield, upon which your reason and your judgment wage war against your passion and your appetite.
Would that I could be the Peacemaker in your soul, that I might turn the discord and the rivalry of your elements into oneness and melody.
But how shall I, unless you yourselves be also the Peacemakers, nay, the lovers of all your elements?"
In other words...
Building Peace in our community-society-country-world requires to build peace within ourselves.
-----------------------
4) All social actors can contribute to building Peace – not only leaders, institutions and the State.
-----------------------
5) Active Participation (المشاركة الفعالة)

a) Dialogue of Life (friendships, marriages, work…)
b) Multiple means of Activism:
•Literature (Fiction, Memoirs, Poetry…)
•Film and Documentary Production
•Radio
•Theatre
•Music
•Visual Arts
•Blogging (Internet)
•Journalism
•Activism in collectivities (NGOs, Interreligious Groups, Youth Groups…) – Lobbying, Demonstrating, Organizing Campaigns, …
------------------------
6) Obstacles- Limits in Lebanon

•The weak application of the law
•Sultawiyyah (Hegemony) and Ahadiyyah (Homogeny)
•The latent state of violence
•The political and religious divisions
•The non-visibility of the real power on account of the profusion of scattered powers and foreign interventions in national affairs.
•The despair that affects many individuals and collectivities within the Lebanese Civil Society, Diaspora and the transnational Civil Society.
•The marginalization of Peacebuilding issues (by the State, the Academic departments, the traditional media, etc.)
“Our voices are not heard as much, because these are not the voices that shape today's headlines”
•The phenomenon of “Ivory Towers” (or the lack of long-term partnerships and cooperation) amongst most of the NGOs and the Youth groups-associations - except for few attempts
------------------------
7) Dalai Lama's quote about Peace:

"Responsibility does not only lie with the leaders of our countries or with those who have been appointed or elected to do a particular job. It lies with each of us individually.Peace, for example, starts within each one of us. When we have inner peace, we can be at peace with those around us."

Rapport:

POMED Dialogue Fellow

Description:
The Project on Middle East Democracy (POMED) is a rapidly growing 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to examining how genuine democracies can develop in the Middle East and how the U.S. can best support that process. In pursuit of this goal, POMED hosts panel forums and other informational events which bring together experts and policymakers to discuss pressing issues. These events provide valuable opportunities to advance knowledge, promote dialogue and shared understanding, and build ties among individuals who share a common interest in supporting democratic reform in the Middle East.

This Fall, in an effort to expand our work in this area, POMED looks forward to hiring our first Dialogue Fellow. The position is unpaid, but provides an extraordinary opportunity to engage first-hand in shaping debates over the future of US policy in the Middle East.

Over the course of the year, the selected Fellow will be provided a range of opportunities to expand his or her skill set, knowledge, and network of professional contacts. Most importantly, the Fellow will take lead responsibility for planning and executing dialogue-focused events for policymakers in Washington, DC: designing topics, reaching out to potential speakers, interfacing with partner organizations, coordinating publicity, and managing event logistics. With the support of other POMED staff members, the Fellow will be expected to host a minimum of one dialogue event each month.

If you seek to complement your graduate studies on governance and democratization and/or the Middle East with practical experience in educating policymakers, this may be an ideal position for you.

Qualifications:
Candidates should be bright, highly motivated individuals with a strong working knowledge of the policy debates surrounding U.S. support for democracy in the Middle East. They should possess outstanding communication and organizational skills, be detail-oriented and be able to multi-task. Candidates should be committed to POMED's mission and principles (www.pomed.org). Prior experience managing events and/or working with VIPs is a plus. The position is unpaid. Candidates should be able to work from September 2008 - May 2009 on a part-time basis (20 hours per week).

To apply, please send a cover letter, resume, and short writing sample to David DeBartolo at dialogue@pomed.org. The deadline for applications is Friday, August 1, 2008.
